Many songs from the 60s and 70s are interpreted as “drug songs”, sometimes lazily, sometimes earnestly. It seems that whenever there is a grey area with songs like these; artists often respond with a non-committal wink or unconvincing denial. Years after “Space Oddity”, “Ashes to Ashes” arrived years to deliver a refreshingly definitive “yes” in regards to the former. Major Tom returns, and is hung up by several hoses, looking regretful and helpless.
